Reflection for Thursday, April 30, 2020
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,
“Do you understand what you are reading?” He replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?”
Good catechesis is the necessary key to making Sacred Scripture meaningful in our lives. Few of us speak the ancient languages of the Bible, and even if we did, few of us know the full context of any particular passage. Our individual experience of God is often insufficient to fully inform our reading of God’s Word.
This is where the Church comes in. We rely on each other, particularly upon our parents, catechists, preachers, and teachers in our youth. Those who have meditated upon the Scriptures for decades often have unpacked deep insights into them. Those who have lived out the Christian faith can give personal context to the Word, and help us to go deeper into the mysteries of God’s Word. Let us take a moment today to stop and thank God for those who have helped us to come to know, love, and look deeper into the wonders of God’s Holy Word.
Peace in Christ,
Father Matthew Kuhn
