Reflection for Friday, April 24, 2020

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,

‘“Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” He said this to test them.’ Jesus knows that the solution to our problems is not something that can be bought. We need God’s Grace. Grace is the key to making our meager gifts grow into something that can change the world. Five loaves and two fish can stand in for the twelve apostles themselves. The Apostles were blessed, broken, and given to the world to spread God’s Church to the ends of the Earth. By the movement of the Holy Spirit, they bore fruit a hundredfold. The twelve baskets left over can symbolize that each Apostle would receive all the graces he would need and more, to the point that carrying God’s grace to others would define his life forever. Like a basket of gifts you just can’t set down, these wicker baskets of leftover fragments were a potent reminder to them of God’s bounteous love.

We can’t pay someone else to fix our family problems, our personal struggles, or our sins. We need God’s Grace to sanctify our Domestic Churches, our homes. We need God’s grace to spread the light of His Gospel to all areas of our lives, to the ends of our personal Earths. God will do it; He is waiting to multiply our gifts and share them. All we need is the courage of the little boy who brought his five loaves and two fish to Jesus to be blessed, broken, and shared.

Peace in Christ,

Father Matthew Kuhn
