Mary anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair. This deeply personal act revealed her great love for Jesus. I imagine the scent of that perfume lingered on Jesus’ body throughout Holy Week, bringing forth memories for those who smelled it. Nard was used to anoint bodies for burial; perhaps Lazarus had been anointed with the very same oil. The smell of it might have brought Lazarus to mind, and presaged Jesus resurrection as well as His burial and death.
We approach the sacred Triduum fully aware that Jesus will rise again. But put yourself, for a moment in the mindset of the disciples accompanying Jesus in Jerusalem. They were frightened at the building tensions surrounding Jesus, and confused by His prophetic words. Is there something we can learn from this? Perhaps meditation on the approaching Passion of Jesus will enrich our experience of Holy Week as the lingering scent of the nard followed Jesus toward the Cross and tomb.
