Reflection for Thursday, 19 March 2020, Solemnity of St. Joseph
March 19, 2020
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,
Saint Joseph, whom we celebrate today, is more than just a foster father to Jesus. Joseph is the embodiment of the Just Man, the worthy descendant of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David. Joseph is faithful and just, protecting the promised Messiah, defending Christ Jesus and Mary, the embodiment of the Church. Joseph is the silent witness, the behind-the-scenes man who makes possible the grand drama of Christ’s redemption. He is the unsung hero of the Church. Joseph, in many ways, stands in for us as we foster Christ’s presence in our homes and our communities. Just as Joseph fostered Jesus in His youth, so too the Church cannot grow without our protection and support. Joseph is called the Terror of Demons. He is the stand-in for God the Father, and he plays his part well, fading into memory as Jesus comes into His own ministry.
May our own actions on behalf of Christ Jesus have the same characteristic humility and deference that make St. Joseph such a model man of God. May Christ increase and we decrease in each act of humility and charity we undertake on behalf of Christ and His Church.
