Behold, the Lamb of God

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,

“John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.’”

John recognized in Jesus the Son of God who would suffer for us as Isaiah had prophesied. This Suffering Servant would take away the sins, not just of Israel, but of the whole world. John knew, by God’s own words, that Jesus was the true Lamb, not like the lambs sacrificed regularly at the temple in Jerusalem, but the true Lamb of God whose one sacrifice would take away the sins of the world forever.

In the Holy Mass, we use this same proclamation of John to present Jesus Christ in the Eucharist: Behold, the Lamb of God. Behold Him Who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. We recognize the Presence of Jesus; we worship Him and we dare to receive His Body and Blood. His self-sacrificing love makes us worthy to receive Him. He is the Lamb whose Blood washes away our sins.

John recognized Him; we recognize Him.

John proclaimed Him to the crowds at the Jordan; we proclaim Him present here and now as we respond in the words of the Centurion at Capernaum: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. (Matthew 8:6-8)

Peace in Christ,

Father Matthew Kuhn
