Patience This Advent

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,

“Do not complain, brothers and sisters, about one another, that you may not be judged…Take as an example of hardship and patience, brothers and sisters, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.”

Saint James advises us to be patient with one another and with God. We cannot dictate the actions of anyone else, human or divine. We can be tempted to want everything to happen how we want it and when we want it, but this only leads us to frustration and anger. We are not in control; God is. Sarcasm and bitterness only drag us down together.

Especially in these weeks of Advent, we should strive to grow in patience. We are called to be a people of mutual encouragement. God has anointed us at our baptism to be a source of joy and hope in this world—to bring glad tidings to the poor. We are not to bring people down with complaints, but to build them up and “Strengthen the hands that are feeble, make firm the knees that are weak, say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! (Is 35:3-4)

May this Advent season be a time of forgiveness and spiritual growth for us all. We pray that the Holy Spirit will give us His fruits of patient endurance and peace so that we truly may rejoice in the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Peace in Christ,

Father Matthew Kuhn
