Long Live Christ the King!

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,

We proudly proclaim Jesus Christ as our King and Lord, but what is the alternative? If Christ is not king, who is? Am I king? What holds chief place in my heart if not God Himself?

St. Paul reminds us of what we left behind when we entered the Kingdom of God through baptism: “He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins…all things were created through him and for him.” If Christ is not our King, then we live in the kingdom of darkness and sin because we are not fulfilling the purpose of our creation.

We can fool ourselves into thinking that we are gods—that we are the arbiters of right and wrong, and whatever we want must be good because we want it. Realistically, this leads to us enslaving ourselves to our passions. If we must scratch every itch we might have, then the itch is king, and we are its slaves! Do we serve our desires or God’s desires? We can fool ourselves or we can be fools for Christ. I choose to humble myself before Jesus Christ, the worthy King Who Is above all heaven and earth. I rejoice to be delivered from darkness by His Grace each time I go to Confession and each time I am blessed to repeat His words of mercy: “This is the Chalice of my Blood…poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

In the words of Blessed Miguel Pro, whose feast we celebrate on November 23rd, the anniversary of his martyrdom: “Viva Cristo Rey!” Long live Christ the King!

Peace in Christ,

Father Matthew Kuhn
