Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,
Instead of a New Year’s resolution this year, how about an Epiphany project? The Feast of the Epiphany of our Lord is the celebration of the spreading of Christ’s light to all the nations. Is there something that we can do, as individuals, families, or as a parish, to spread the Gospel to someone new in our lives? How can we let the light of Christ shine through us more clearly in our day to day actions?
The Prophet Isaiah lays out the need for our evangelization: “See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the LORD shines, and over you appears his glory. Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance. Raise your eyes and look about; they all gather and come to you.” We should be thankful that we have been given the gift of faith and eager to share that faith with others. The light of our faith is needed to dispel the darkness of fear and anxiety that covers our world, perhaps now more than ever!
Saint Paul describes himself as a steward of the mysteries, and we can say the same of ourselves: “You have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for your benefit.” Our gifts are not for us alone, especially the gift of faith. We lose none of our faith by sharing it, but rather grow and deepen in our own bond with Jesus as we introduce others to Him. Being Christ for others makes us grow closer to Him Whom we serve.
This is the best new effort that I can imagine for us this new year: that we would all strive to extend the love of Christ to others and in doing so, grow in faith ourselves.
Peace in Christ,
Father Matthew Kuhn
