"Fear the LORD, your God, and keep, throughout the days of your lives, all his statutes and commandments which I enjoin on you, and thus have long life. Hear then, Israel, and be careful to observe them, that you may grow and prosper the more, in keeping with the promise of the LORD…” (Deut. 6:2-3)
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,
Do we obey God because we fear punishment? Are we secretly looking to get away with as much sin as we can, hoping that God will not catch us? What is our real motivation for following God’s commandments? Do we love sin more than we love true, lasting, eternal joy with God?
If we love God, in humility we will seek to follow God’s will because we know it will lead to our greatest possible happiness. If we acknowledge that our all-knowing and all-loving Creator made us to be happy with Him forever in heaven, then our actions will follow that path which most swiftly gets us to union with God.
If, however, we set our sights no further than immediate and short-term pleasures, we can easily get distracted, or get our priorities mixed up. We can fail to recognize the long-term effects of our sins on our souls or the souls of others. We get bogged down by sin. We don’t truly love sin, so why pretend? Why settle for less than the best offer available—eternal life?
May this month of November and our concentration on the end of this world remind us of our higher calling and help us refocus our priorities on heaven.
