“I was no prophet…The LORD took me from following the flock, and said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel.”
The Prophet Amos speaks for all of us when he defends his vocation in this way. Prophecy is not something we choose for ourselves. We are called to be prophetic by virtue of our Baptism. When God prompts us to speak truth in His Name, we are compelled to respond. We leave behind our regular work and work for Truth Himself. If this is our own idea, it will fail. But, if we are truly being obedient to the Lord, He will give us the guidance to say what He would have us say and the courage to carry it out.
