We who are blessed to live in “lake country” have the privilege of enjoying the breathtaking beauty of nature on a daily basis. We can regularly take part in adoration of God the Father in the beauty of God’s creation. My spiritual director used to refer to the sunset as “the monstrance of the Father.” We are truly blessed to take part in God’s self-revelation through the beauty that surrounds us.
Is it any wonder, then, that Jesus chose to use scenes from nature as the basis of his parables? Jesus drew lessons out of seeds and trees and nesting birds. Jesus made clear to us that which is present in the mystery of creation. God loves us; God ordered creation toward our good. We are part of God’s plan for the tending of creation—coworkers in God’s great garden.
Let us give as much attention to tending the garden of our souls and building up the Kingdom of God as we do to the fields we plant, the gardens we tend, and the cabins we decorate. May our recreational time this Summer truly be re-creation for our souls. God’s wonderful works surround us; let us not ignore the Creator as we enjoy His Creation. May our enjoyment of this world lead us to greater worship of God.
