“Go and Announce the Gospel of the Lord"

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,

Jesus is fully human and fully divine, even in His Resurrected Body. We see this in our Gospel this week. Jesus proves His humanness by showing the disciples his flesh and bones, complete with the wounds of His Passion. He then “opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.” This He does as only God can do. Jesus, both God and Man, is present there in the midst of them, and they respond with joy and amazement.

Jesus then says to the disciples, and by extension to us: “You are witnesses of these things.” We are meant to be filled with joy and amazement at the presence of Jesus, and this joy and amazement should drive us to spread the good news. His Spirit inspires us; we carry it out. Our efforts at Evangelization are to be both human and divine. Jesus is risen from the dead, and “repentance, for the forgiveness of sins” is to be preached in His Name.

He chose us to preach this forgiveness. In the Sacraments of Baptism and Reconciliation we receive the forgiveness of our sins. At Mass we have our minds opened to the Scriptures in the Liturgy of the Word, and we touch and receive His Body and Blood in the Eucharist. We are witnesses of these things. May we take to heart the blessing that sends us forth at the end of Mass: “Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord.”

Peace in Christ,

Fr. Matthew Kuhn
