“Nothing will be impossible for God.” This is the proclamation of the Archangel Gabriel to Mary regarding the conception of John the Baptist. Gabriel gives this revelation as reassurance for Mary, who must face the awesome reality of her own unique motherhood by the power of the Holy Spirit. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.”
God can bring about fruitfulness from a woman well past child-bearing age. God can make a virgin conceive a child. God can make Himself present as one of us, as He chooses. As we hear at Mass on Christmas Day: “And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.” God shared with Mary the fullness of His Grace, and she became the mother of our Lord Jesus.
This was God’s desire—to make His dwelling with us. Restoring the human race to its former union with God was impossible for us, but nothing is impossible for God. He bridged the gap; He paid the ransom of our sins; He redeemed us by His Blood, and it all started with this deceivingly simple reality: The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
May you and your families have a blessed Christmas season and be filled with the gifts of God’s grace. Merry Christmas!
