The Bridegroom and the Church, the Bride

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

I want to reflect on our first reading this Sunday, from the book of Proverbs.

“When one finds a worthy wife, her value is far beyond pearls.” A hard-working spouse is a gift. No one wants to be the only one working in the relationship. We want a spouse worthy of our hard work who will work just as hard for our common good. This is not only true of happy human marriages, but reflects God’s desire for relationship with us. Christ repeatedly uses wedding imagery, calling Himself the Bridegroom and the Church the Bride.

Thus we can read this passage as what is expected of us as Church in relationship to God. We are to be industrious and untiring in our service of God. We are expected to represent God’s household well by being charitable to those in need. “Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting; the woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.” We may not look like much, but we can make God proud by working well for His Kingdom. This meshes well with the messages of preparedness we find in our Gospel readings these last weeks of the Church year. We long to hear the words of the master in this weeks’ parable: “Well done, my good and faithful servant…come, share your master’s joy.”

We have been entrusted with gifts and talents for God’s service; let us not be idle, but industrious in building up the Kingdom of God.

Peace in Christ,

Father Matthew Kuhn
