Faith is Our Greatest Treasure
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,
We are now in our third straight week of parables about the Kingdom of Heaven. This week we hear the parable of the pearl of the buried treasure and the parable of the pearl of great price, both of which point us to the necessity of giving our whole lives to God. Every part of who we are is to be at the service of God, including our work, our play, our possessions, our families, and the fruits of our labors. Christ is King of all. Being Christian therefor implies allowing Christ to be Lord of every aspect of our lives.
The man who finds the buried treasure sells all that he has out of joy! He does not hold anything back from God, nor does he feel fear or anxiety about risking his whole life for this treasure. This kind of faith, this total dependence upon God is to be the model for our stewardship of the gifts that God has entrusted to us.
Faith is our greatest treasure, our real treasure, not our material gifts or even the talents that God has bestowed upon us. Of all our gifts, Faith is the gift that puts all other gifts into proper perspective. Faith orders our lives toward God and teaches us to put all our gifts at God’s disposal. Ultimately, it is faith that allows us to offer up our lives with joy. May we find the faith we need to joyfully offer ourselves to God and joyfully receive whatever He wills for us.
Peace in Christ,
Father Matthew Kuhn
