The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - Together in Perfect Unity
June 8, 2017
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,
We celebrate the Most Holy Trinity this first Sunday after Pentecost. Our God is a communion of Persons. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit live together in perfect unity. The community of the Trinity is our model for the Church.
Like the Trinity, we are called to live as One. This is the first “mark” of the Church, the first identifying characteristic that tells the world that we are in fact the Church.
The Church is Holy. This is the second mark of the Church, as we strive to live like Exodus describes the LORD: “a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity.” Holiness can be summed up as imitating these virtues.
The Church is Catholic and Apostolic. These final two marks describe the missionary life of the Church. Just as the Father sent the Son, and the Spirit proceeds from them both, so too the members of the Church are apostles sent forth to spread the Gospel to the whole world. We are truly catholic when we embrace the whole universe in our prayer and purpose. We are apostolic when we embrace our call to be ambassadors for Christ.
When we imitate the Trinity in these ways we truly are representing God to the World. This is our mission and our identity as members of the Body of Christ, the Church.
