STEWARDS OF LOVE AND PRAYER

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

Our Lord Jesus asks of us a very simple yet very difficult choice: He asks us to dedicate everything to His service. We are to commit ourselves, our resources, our time and energy, our whole lives, both present and future, to spreading the Gospel and caring for the poor. He challenges us to really consider the cost of discipleship, even comparing pouring ourselves out in love of God to “hating” those whom we hold most dear; every other love should seem insignificant when compared to our love for God. We are expected to live for God who is love, not for any lesser love. Jesus poured Himself out for us; we are simply returning his love in full.

This kind of radical dedication to Christ seems less extreme when we consider that everything we have is a gift from God. When we offer up “father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even [our] own life” we are simply offering them back to the God who gave them to us first. Our gifts have been entrusted to us not for us alone, but for the purpose God intends for them—for the care of the poor and the building up of His Church.

We are bound for heaven. Our destination is set, so we must prepare ourselves for the journey. The possessions we renounce for Christ are investments in our divine future. Our stewardship here on earth of God’s gifts is our preparation for the account we will present to Him in heaven. The tithes (10%) we give to Christ’s Church are only a small part of investing ourselves fully in God. We are building up the Kingdom of God, in our hearts and in our parishes “on earth as it is in heaven.”

So let us work to make our sacrificial giving an act of love and prayer. God has given us everything; may we be generous stewards of such great gifts.

Peace in Christ,

Fr. Matthew Kuhn
