Humility, Thankfulness and Joy
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,
Our third Preface for the Eucharistic Prayer in Lent includes this prayer:
“You will that our self-denial should give you thanks, humble our sinful pride, contribute to the feeding of the poor, and so help us imitate you in your kindness.”
This sums up the proper attitude for us in Lent. We deny ourselves in order to focus our thanks on the Giver of all gifts instead of getting caught up in the gifts themselves. We humble ourselves in order to glorify God. And we “give up” so that we might give away in charity those gifts we have received from God’s charity. In all that we do, penitentially and otherwise, we act in imitation of the God Who sustains us in His love.
May our Lenten practices reflect the kindness of God, and our self-denial truly become a source of humility, thankfulness, and joy.
Peace in Christ,
Father Matthew Kuhn
