Reflection for Thursday, May 7, 2020

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,

When Jesus had washed the disciples’ feet, he said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it.” Jesus gave this example of humble service to his Apostles on purpose. He wanted those whom He was about to make leaders in the Church to embrace their responsibilities as service to the people of God, not as domination. Authority in the Church is responsibility to care for the needs of those entrusted to you by God. Jesus served them in humility, then gave them Himself in an act of even greater humility. The importance of connecting this lesson to the Eucharist cannot be overemphasized. The Eucharist itself is an act of compassion—of God reaching down to us and lifting us up to Himself. This is Jesus’ example that we are asked to imitate; we are called to serve joyfully in His Name.

Peace in Christ,

Father Matthew Kuhn
