Reflection for Wednesday, 1 April 2020

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,

“Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?” “Assuredly, O king,” they answered. “But,” he replied, “I see four men unfettered and unhurt, walking in the fire, and the fourth looks like a son of God.”

When we are in the depths of affliction, God is with us. When our souls are being tried by the fires of temptation, opposition, and outright evil, then Christ, the custodian of our souls, is with us. We might even go so far as to pray for trials and sorrows so that the grace of God might be made visible in us, if we were courageous enough to wish for such greatness.

It is in the fire that lesser goods are burned away; the dross fails and the pure gold proves true. My favorite line from the book of Daniel might be the response of the three young men when they are asked to worship the golden statue in violation of their faith: “If our God, whom we serve, can save us from the white-hot furnace and from your hands, O king, may he save us! But even if he will not, know, O king, that we will not serve your god or worship the golden statue that you set up.” Even if God does not save us from the trials of this life, still we will not give in to evil, for our hope is in the eternal life of heaven that awaits us.

Peace in Christ,

Father Matthew Kuhn
