Reflection for Thursday, 26 March, 2020
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,
Moses prefigures Jesus’ role as intercessor for humanity before the wrath of God. In their depravity, the people of Israel turned away from true worship of God and fell into idolatry. It was Moses who turned aside God’s wrath by appealing to God’s love and care for them despite their sins. In the same way, Jesus stands in the middle between us and God the Father, but in the case of Jesus, God’s wrath is not merely turned aside. In Jesus the price of our sins is paid in His Blood. Jesus shows us the Father’s self-giving love by shedding His blood for us. The God we cannot see is made visible as we are washed in the Blood of the Lamb. Jesus, like Moses, appeals to the love of God; He is the incarnate love of the Father, poured out to wash us and make us worthy again of standing in right relationship with God. How blessed we are to have such a Savior. How blessed we are to receive and pass on the merciful love of God!
In this time of uncertainty, turn to the Lord. Set aside the idols that distract you from Him. Offer your sacrifices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving for the remission of sins and the upbuilding of God’s Church. Make your homes and your families holy and build up the Church of God in your midst. We have this time of Lent and this time of isolation to test us. May our hearts turn toward the Lord, accept and receive His love, for He is Christ our Savior.
Peace in Christ,
Father Matthew Kuhn
