Reflection for Friday, 20 March 2020

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,

‘One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, “Which is the first of all the commandments?”’

The attitude of the scribe reveals something to us right away. Unlike those scribes and Pharisees who came to test Jesus, this scribe comes to consult Him. The scribe is honestly seeking the truth, and responds positively when Jesus affirms the truth he has already reached himself. He does not reject this truth just because Jesus says it; truth is truth, regardless of whose mouth proclaims it. The scribe, having arrived at a seemingly good idea by himself then consults someone he knows, or at least suspects, to be wise. He doesn’t assume that this idea is true just because he thought of it. He wants an outside perspective to confirm his suspicions. Here we see expressed intellectual humility, rational consultation, and the shared joy that comes from finding someone who can affirm a deep truth and share it with you.

‘And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, [Jesus] said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.”

When we arrive at truth through honest scholarship and consult with Jesus in prayer, we too can draw near to the Kingdom of God. God is Truth, and our honest search for truth will inevitably lead us to Him-Who-Is the source of all truth. May we have the honesty and humility to entrust our search for truth to Jesus, even in difficult times.

Peace in Christ,

Father Matthew Kuhn
