Safe Haven Sunday

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,

“My beloved brothers and sisters, be firm, steadfast, always fully devoted to the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” (1 Cor 15:58)

St. Paul exhorts us to work for the things of heaven even in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds. This is true in our personal struggles as well as in larger, global concerns. As our Diocese of St. Cloud celebrates Safe Haven Sunday this weekend, I wish to apply St. Paul’s message of hope to our efforts to combat the scourge of pornography in our culture. Pornography may seem like an overwhelming problem and can be a crippling addiction for individuals, yet there is always hope! Christ Jesus has given us many weapons for our fight against sin, and this sin is as vulnerable to God’s Grace as any other.

Regular Confession and reception of the Holy Eucharist are our heavy artillery in this fight. The Blessed Virgin Mary, our Mother, is our rear guard; Saint Joseph, her Most Chaste Spouse, and Saint Michael the Archangel go before us to defend us in our day of battle. The rosary is our sword and the Word of God, Sacred Scripture, is our battle plan. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, our devotion to the Body and Blood of Jesus in the Eucharist, is a powerful devotion to help us cling to Christ and conquer sin. Fasting is a great discipline of our earthly bodies for the sake of growing in heavenly virtues, particularly chastity.

I invite all of you to devote one hour each month to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for reparations against the dignity of God’s gift of human sexuality in addition to the prayers we offer for the protection of the dignity of human life. This is too great a problem to ignore, but not so great that we cannot conquer in Jesus Christ, our Lord. May the grace of God overflow into our hearts and drive out all sin and vice.

Peace in Christ,

Father Matthew Kuhn
