All Good Giving and Every Perfect Gift is From Above

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,

For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the LORD, our God, is to us whenever we call upon him? (Deuteronomy 4:7)

The People of God in Deuteronomy were about to enter into the Promised Land, which God had given them as the fulfilment of his Covenant with Abraham. God entrusted them with the land, and gave them his Commandments to govern their lives in relationship with Him. God gave them this great gift and expected them to care for it well according to his Law.

It is no surprise that God attached expectations to the gift of the Land. Just like Grandma wants to see you wear the sweater she made for you, so too God asks us to put to good use the gifts which He has given us. As Saint James reminds us in his Letter: All good giving and every perfect gift is from above…Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves. (James 1:17a, 22) Fancy gifts come with instruction manuals. If we want to take full advantage of the graces God has given us, shouldn’t we ask God how best to use them?

God’s instructions in how to use our gifts are part of the gift itself. God’s commandments are instructions for us in how to best use our gifts, best maintain our relationships, and best grow in health and well-being in God’s sight. We are stewards of creation, not masters. We need to know the Master’s will in order to best carry it out, and that means connecting with God frequently, humbly, and openly. We should be bringing God into all our decisions, asking God for guidance in how we invest our money, how we manage our time, and how we share our gifts with others. We want to be good stewards, obedient to our Lord, and grateful for the privilege of serving Him.

Peace in Christ,

Father Matthew Kuhn
