Don't Let God's Extra Grace Go to Waste

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ Jesus,

“When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples, ‘Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.’” (John 6:12)

Jesus’ grace is superabundant but never superfluous. He gives us more than we need for ourselves, but not more than we need to be able to share with others. Even though Jesus multiplied the five loaves and two fish into more than the 5000 people could eat, He did not want the extra to go to waste. Imagine the disciples continuing to eat those twelve baskets of food over the next few days. As they continued to chew on this miraculous bread, I believe they must have also slowly chewed on the ideas Jesus presented to them in his Bread of Life discourse. I imagine that they showed the leftovers to others who had not been present for the miracle and even shared some of the bread with these newcomers. In this way the miracle could continue to change lives.

We are invited to share God’s grace with others in a similar manner. The untold graces we receive in the Eucharist are not for us alone, nor are the small miracles that we receive each and every day. How often do we share these gifts with others? Do we talk about our experiences of God, particularly our experiences of Jesus in the Eucharist? I encourage you, as we continue reading through John Chapter 6, to share your experiences of Jesus with each other. Make present for others the miracles you have received, and you may see their faith grow right in front of your eyes.

Don’t let God’s extra grace go to waste; gather the fragments left over and share them!

Peace in Christ,

Father Matthew Kuhn
