Gift of the Holy Spirit

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

In our Gospel reading this Sunday, Jesus promises us the gift of the Holy Spirit and peace. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” The correlation between the Holy Spirit and peace is not to be underestimated. The peace of Jesus is the peace of mind and heart that comes from being in total union with God. This is the unshakable, deep peace we en-joy when we are living in a manner free from all sin and even the desire for sin. Death, the consequence of sin, cannot harm us when we are living in union with God. Death causes no fear in the heart of one who is already living the will of God “on earth as it is in heaven.”

The Holy Spirit is our path to this peace. Thanks be to God, we are given the Gift of the Indwelling Holy Spirit at our baptism. Every baptized Christian has access to this peace. And if we should wander into sin, and fear and anxiety come our way, we have a quick remedy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. How easily available is the peace of Christ! How wonderful is the gift of our Advocate before God who offers us here on earth the per-ect union we seek in heaven.
